Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Johanna Dekel is a textile artist with a Master’s degree in Textiles from the Universidad de los Andes. After moving to France nearly twenty years ago, she gradually distanced herself from fast fashion, struck by the contrast with her upbringing, where clothing was passed down, repaired, and only discarded at the end of its life cycle.
Her artistic practice is rooted in transforming discarded materials: old garments, vintage fabrics, forgotten lace, into new creations brought to life through embroidery, weaving, and painting.
Each piece explores the memory embedded in fibers, the heritage of traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary questions surrounding sustainability.
Johanna Dekel creates singular works and objects in which the richness of the past meets the concerns of the present, inviting a renewed sensitivity toward material, time, and transmission.
